J. W. Stannard
Company
The J. W.
Stannard Company has for 13 years been a  leading
designer and manufacturer of hand-tuned wind chimes for
the giftware and other markets. The J. W. Stannard chime
is known as the standard for tonal quality. The
brilliant sound of the J. W. Stannard wind chime and the
familiar high quality hardwood parts are just two of the
reasons that the Company has maintained its position and
reputation of market leadership.
The name
"J. W. Stannard" is synonymous with hand-tuned wind
chimes for thousands of wind chime users around the
world. The Company was a pioneer in the sale of wind
chimes in the gift ware industry and retains wide brand
recognition in the industry and among users. Its
customer base includes many of the leading specialty
gift and garden retailers across the US.
John W.
Stannard, the founder of the Company, was raised in a
family centered on musical instruments. His father was a
piano builder and tuner. He began studying music at age
four and built his first instrument at age six.
Throughout his childhood, he studied music and built
guitars with his father. While seeking a more profitable
line of instruments to build than guitars, he became
involved in percussion instruments. In 1980, John
Stannard founded Om Percussion, a company making chimes
only for musicians. In 1985, while seeking a broader
market for chimes, John Stannard starting selling wind
chimes in a kiosk at a local mall. Hence, the J. W.
Stannard Company was started.
In
January 1999, the J.W.  Stannard Company
was acquired by FIGI Graphics, a unit of Giftware
Holdings, of San Diego, California. Giftware Holdings is
a portfolio company of Saunders Karp & Megrue, a leading
private equity group headquartered in New York City. It
is contemplated that J. W. Stannard will benefit
substantially from FIGI’s dedicated sales force and
manufacturing relationships in the Far East for the
production of J. W. Stannard’s lower cost products.
