DAX Manufacturers, Inc.
DAX Manufacturers,
Inc., ("DAX") located in Orangeburg, New York, was a
prominent designer and manufacturer of "ready made"
contemporary and classic wall and photo picture frames
to the upper-end retail market. It was acquired in a
cash transaction by Decorel Incorporated, the world's
largest independent manufacturer of picture frames and
framed art.
In 1970, DAX presented its first product,
 a
plastic box frame known as the "DAX frame." The design
of the DAX frame became very popular during the 1970's
and was placed in the permanent design collection of the
Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Mr. Julius Shultz
joined the Company in 1972 and became the majority
shareholder in 1982. As part of the transaction with
Decorel, Mr. Shultz agreed to continue in the management
of DAX for a five year period.
DAX's primary customers were mass merchandisers,
wholesalers and retailers of arts and crafts, home and
life style stores, photo and camera stores, department
stores, and custom picture framers. Approximately 70% of
its products were sold under the "DAX" tradename. The
remaining 30% were sold to leading mass merchandisers
such as Lechters, Crate and Barrel, and Aaron Bros. for
resale under their private labels.
Decorel produces a wide variety of high quality,
mid-priced frames and is a major supplier of frames to
discount, chain, drug, supermarket, craft, and home
improvement retailers.
Founded just after the turn of
the century in 1903, Decorel is America's oldest primary
manufacturer of picture frames and framed art and the
world's largest privately owned company in the industry.
It has approximately 500,000 square feet of
manufacturing/distribution space in Mundelein, Illinois;
Chicago, Illinois; Waukega, Illinois; and Durango,
Mexico.
